The legend begins...

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller’s page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

The relationship between Patroclus and Achilles was written in such a way that every chapter you read the more you understand what true loves feels like. They have such a healthy, refreshing relationship. However, this book is not for those who don't like a tear wrenching twist.

This is currently, and I am certain will forever be my favorite novel simply because the feelings were real and the descriptions were beautiful. This entire book made me want to fall in love again and want to be cherished the same way Patroclus cherished Achilles and Achilles cherished Patroclus. I cannot explain the relief I got when the two ended up finally being together in peace. I love, love, LOVE this novel and I will probably never stop recommending it to my friends XD

Such a good book! I love how the author takes a character like Achilles (such a Campbell-ish hero!) and turns him into a human. For me, this book is about meeting the expectations of others

I read this in practically one sitting, i honestly was a wreck by the end. I chose to read it cuz I thought people were exaggerating with their reviews, but honestly the book was such a good read from beginning to end, and truly brings a new perspective to the "heroes" of Greek Mythology, making them a little more human and understandable. And the end I dont even have words to describe how sad but relieving but heartbreaking it was, truly i recommend for anyone to read but esp Greek Mythology nerds like me

everything you want in a greek myth— love, scandals, tragedy, and a sense of hopefulness. madeline miller is no doubt a very talented author. with a nice poetic undertone and beautifully descriptive scenes, her style of writing takes the reader on an adventure! i did not cry as my friends did but enjoyed the book until the very end.
